It's interesting that the human mind automatically simplifies all arguments into black and white: good vs. evil, up vs. down, red vs. blue. It's as if we can't comprehend a "gray area" where both sides have to actually work together, try to understand each other, and come up with a common solution.
In most issues and conflicts, I try to make an effort to understand all opposing viewpoints. In the process of doing that, I usually end up alienating both sides. Liberals call me conservative, and conservatives call me liberals. Religious people think I'm "out there," and "secular" people think I'm some sort of religious fanatic. That means I'm probably exactly where I need to be,and where my Prophet (PBUH) advised me to be: on the middle path.
I think this human state we are in is simply a product of years of conditioning. While we argue and hate each other over the most trivial of issues, we lose sight of the plight that we are all in. Instead of banding together and using our strength in numbers, we are divided and distracted. We obsess over these actors that we call politicians. We argue till our face turns blue about gay marriage, LeBron vs Jordan, Selena vs Miley, Democrats vs Republicans...and we forget that we can actually work together and change things for the better.
It's all a distraction, man.

In my humble 27 years on this planet, one of the things I've learned is that you should always be careful of someone who acts as if they have nothing to lose. This person is usually only concerned with self-preservation and their actions will ultimately compromise the people around them.
